Albums to look out for in 2012: RM Hubbert
Thursday, 26 January 2012
We've already chosen the artists we're tipping for breakthrough success in 2012, but we also want to highlight the wave of more established names with new material on the way this year. Today Euan Robertson looks forward to an album from Glasgow guitarist RM Hubbert
At the end of this month, RM Hubbert will release his second solo album, and his first since signing to Chemikal Underground.
Approaching a double-decade of music creation, "Hubby" is no stranger to the industry. He has, however, touched on something quite different, and very special, with his solo career. Debut First & Last was a critically acclaimed triumph, and his live shows provide the rare spectacle of a noisy rabble falling instantly silent to marvel at both his technical ability on guitar and the emotional impact of his music.
So with a rising reputation, it was inevitable that his follow-up would generate excitement. Add to this an incredible roster of collaborators from the highest pedigree of Scottish indie circles, and the upcoming 13 Lost & Found is comfortably into our list of the year's essential albums.
On the number of collaborations (13 credited across 11 tracks), Hubby says: “It involved a lot more organisation and took a lot longer but it was also a lot more fun, so it all evens out.”
The prospect of a label release, as opposed to the DIY nature of First & Last, hasn't piled on the pressure as far as Hubby is concerned. “They are incredibly supportive and helpful," he says of Chemikal. "I do feel a little more pressure personally but that's more down to not wanting to disappoint any of the people involved with the album.”
Having been fortunate enough to hear the album early, I am happy to stand up and declare it an absolutely stunning piece of work. The delicate opener ‘We Radioed’ provides a smooth transition from his past work into the current album, leading perfectly into the unmistakable vocals of Aidan Moffat on ‘Car Song’ and beyond.
This promises to be an album which will feature heavily on many a playlist throughout the year.
• 13 Lost & Found is released on January 30 on Chemikal Underground. To accompany the release there will be one full performance with Aidan Moffat, John Ferguson, Marion Kenny, Hanna Tuulikki, Emma Pollock, Rafe Fitzpatrick, Michael John McCarthy, Shane Connolly and Alasdair Roberts at Stereo in Glasgow on Friday 27th January and another at King's Place in London on Friday 3rd February with Aidan Moffat, Emma Pollock and Alasdair Roberts.
